Finding Calm After the Storm

The day in Ukraine took an unexpected turn. It started out very hot, but soon dark clouds gathered and a storm moved in. Everyone grew anxious when we heard that, not far from us, the wind had torn the roofs off several homes in a nearby village. The children were especially frightened as the wind picked up around us.

So we did the one thing we could in that moment—we gathered and prayed. And somehow, the storm passed us by. It felt like a small miracle. A reminder that we were being watched over.

Among the children in the camp was Sasha, a quiet boy with a difficult past. After losing his mother, Sasha was left in the care of his father. But his father had moved on with a new partner and, sadly, left Sasha behind—hungry, overlooked, and without proper care. His clothes were worn, his eyes tired.

That’s when a kind neighbor stepped in. She started by offering food, clothes, and small treats, doing what she could to ease Sasha’s burden. But when it became clear that Sasha needed more than just the occasional meal, she reached out to the authorities. Thanks to her courage, Sasha was placed in an orphanage where he could finally receive the care, safety, and attention every child deserves.

Even after that, the neighbor didn’t forget him. She continued sending care packages—snacks, warm clothes, little things to make sure Sasha knew he was not alone, and that someone still cared.
