Growing in Confidence in Tanzania

At Island Hope Orphanage Centre in Chukwani, Tanzania, children recently took part in a lesson called “I Am Special and Unique.” The goal was simple: to help them understand their value, recognize their strengths, and grow in confidence. The volunteers talked with the children about the different gifts people have, from sports and music to leadership, creativity, and helping others. They also encouraged them to make good choices, learn from mistakes, and keep trying even when something feels difficult.

Mwajuma was one of the volunteers who helped guide the lesson. She spent time encouraging the children and reminding them that each of them has abilities worth developing. She spoke about working hard in school, believing in themselves, and not giving up when challenges come. Her kind and patient approach helped create a space where the children could participate freely and feel supported.

One of the children who has benefited from that kind of encouragement is Awatif. She came to Island Hope needing a safe and supportive place to grow. Since joining the center, she has continued with her education, taken part in group activities, and built friendships with other children. Over time, those around her have seen her confidence grow. She enjoys learning new things, playing with the other children, and becoming more involved in both school and center activities. She is also becoming more comfortable expressing herself and sharing her thoughts. The care and guidance she receives have helped her focus less on the difficulties of her past and more on what she can learn, do, and become.

Awatif’s progress is a reminder that children often grow through steady care, encouragement, and people who believe in them. Lessons like “I Am Special and Unique” help reinforce what she is already beginning to discover: her past does not determine her future, and she has value, abilities, and room to grow. We are grateful for the support that makes these opportunities possible for children in Tanzania.
