A visit to Japu, Peru, does not always go exactly as planned. On one of our youth activity days, rapidly changing weather and snow meant lots of adjusting for our Allies team. Still, the children gathered for the activity “I Am God’s Creation,” where they talked about identity, worth, and the truth that our circumstances do not determine our value in God’s eyes.

Roy, one of the volunteers, has family connections in the community and was able to reconnect with relatives during the visit. Even with those personal moments, he stayed involved throughout the day, helping organize the children and supporting the other volunteers as plans changed. His familiarity with Japu made it easier for the team to work together and keep the children engaged despite the weather.

One child who stood out was Elizabeth, a cheerful preteen who had recently been going through difficulties that affected her mood. This day, however, she joined the activities with energy and interest. She talked with the volunteers, participated in the lesson, and enjoyed being with the other children. There was also excitement throughout the community because a wedding celebration was approaching, adding even more life to the day. As the children learned about being God’s creation, they were reminded that each of them has value and difficult circumstances do not change who they are in His eyes.

Before leaving, the children received a page with part of the day’s lesson to take home, along with cookies and lollipops. Elizabeth’s laughter and time with her friends stayed with the volunteers as they said goodbye. Even with the snow, changing plans, and a busy day around them, her smile was a simple reminder of why these visits matter. Thanks to those who make this work possible, children in communities like Japu have a place to learn, connect, and be reminded that they are valued.
