Teaching Kids about Planning and Goal Setting

As adults, we know that everything worth having is worth working hard for. If we have a dream, we need to set goals and take actions in order to achieve it. We need to have the proper mindset, commitment, and discipline that will enable us to have what we want.

This is exactly what we taught the group of orphans we visited last week at Filimonkovsky Orphanage in Moscow. We had some great conversations and were able to understand their goals and dreams in life. We taught them that in order to achieve their dreams, they need plan properly and set goals – and that it is good to reward yourself when you achieve those goals. We also stressed the importance of honesty and integrity – that they should not use deception, theft, or other negative means to achieve their goals. For “the Lord holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.” Proverbs 2:6-7

Anton, a 15-year-old orphan, told us he wants to become a driver. We told him in order to fulfill his ambition, he needs to study and word hard for it. Anton, who was in the orphanage due to illness, may be lacking in attention and care, but he surely is hopeful about his future and believes that something great awaits him.

We were happy to see how the children understood our simple lesson for that day. Aside from this, we sang with them, celebrated those with birthdays, gave away prizes, and ate pizza together. Bringing smiles to these children truly is a rewarding experience.

Another volunteer, Daria, agrees. As woman who lives by the words of Christ, she has dedicated her life to visit orphanages, participate in missionary activities, join children’s camps, and help less fortunate people. This was Daria’s first time with us to the orphanage. After witnessing how happy the children were, she promised to join us again on our next visit!
