Spreading Calm and Joy in Giheta

In Giheta, Burundi, one young volunteer shared how meaningful it felt to teach children about staying calm. At just 21 years old, she was filled with joy as she watched the children connect deeply with the lesson on breathing and positive expression. They listened carefully, shared their own stories, and eagerly practiced what they learned. One little girl even said she would use deep breathing the next time she felt angry, a small but powerful sign that the lesson had truly reached their hearts.

The volunteer expressed her gratitude for being part of such a life-changing program and hoped more children in other communities would have the same opportunity to learn about peace and self-control. For her, seeing how quickly the children understood and applied the lessons was proof that kindness and calm can be taught — and that it makes a difference.

Among the participants was a bright 9-year-old girl from Giheta who loved learning how to manage her feelings. She enjoyed drawing her emotions with colors and practicing slow breathing when she felt sad or upset. Even when her brother teased her or played with her toys, she said she now knew how to stay calm. Her joy grew when she received a package of school materials from Allies, complete with pens, notebooks, and a new uniform. Seeing her name on the gift made her smile with pride.

She promised to keep practicing everything she learned and to share the “Magic of Calm” with her friends. For her, and for many other children in Giheta, these simple lessons are helping turn everyday moments into opportunities for peace, patience, and hope.
