In Ukraine, two young lives crossed paths in a simple but meaningful way. One is a 21-year-old young man who grew up in an orphanage with his sister. As children, they found a safe place in a church Bible club, where they first learned about faith and community. After their mother passed away due to the consequences of harmful habits, the church became an important source of support. Over time, he felt a strong desire to help others, especially children who were facing struggles of their own. He continued to ask how he could serve, and when the opportunity finally came, he stepped in with commitment and care.
That opportunity came through a children’s program, where he began volunteering and was paired with a 7-year-old boy. The boy’s parents had separated, and his father was struggling with drug addiction. Living apart from his parents, the child carried confusion and pain that no child should have to face alone. During a lesson called “My choice is Health,” the boy listened closely and began to understand how harmful habits can affect lives. For the first time, he spoke about wanting to make better choices for himself and his future.
Through regular time together, the volunteer and the child built trust. They talked, walked to the store together, and shared everyday moments that slowly made a difference. The child learned that he mattered and that healthy choices were possible, even when life felt unstable. The volunteer, in turn, found purpose in being present and reliable, offering the kind of guidance he once needed himself.
With support from caring volunteers and those who make this work possible, children in Ukraine are learning that their past does not have to define their future. Thank you for standing with young people who are choosing health, hope, and a better path forward.
