At St. Peter and Paul Primary School in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, dozens of children gathered for a lesson called “My Word Matters.” Through stories, role plays, and group discussions. They discovered that honesty, keeping promises, and speaking truthfully are not only important in daily life but also vital for building stronger families and communities. The classroom was filled with curiosity and joy as the children reflected on how their words can shape their lives.

Volunteer leader Etiman guided the session with care, encouraging the children to think about promises they make to others, to themselves, and to God. His passion and thoughtful questions reminded them that choosing honesty is also choosing to build trust. For many of the children, this was the first time they realized that their words carry weight and that being truthful shows respect for themselves and others.

One of the most powerful moments came from a young boy named Kuku. Despite the daily struggles of growing up in a conflict-affected community, Kuku spoke with courage about the importance of honesty. He explained how he helps his mother carry heavy water containers and encourages his siblings to stay in school. With sincerity, he said, “Sometimes it is hard to always tell the truth, but I know that when I do, people trust me more. I want to be someone my family can rely on.” His words left a deep impression on both classmates and volunteers, showing that even children can lead by example.
