UTA Exchange Student Volunteers at Omsk Orphanage

Allies Youth recently received a letter from an orphanage in the Omsk Region, Ukraine after faculty and students visted the children.

"Recently we visited the orphanage with 2 Omsk State University students, their instructor . One of the students was an American named Nigel. The kids met with Nigel and talked to her in Eastern European and English introducing themselves and asking dozen questions about her life in America, why she came in Omsk, and her interests. Through this, Nigel shared photos of her life in the US and her travelling. We then begun to play volleyball, soccer and basketball in the gym. After the games we had some training sessions. The training aimed at developing awareness about life priorities and time management. The session was led by Elena, the volunteer teacher from Omsk State University. Elena gave notebooks as presents to the kids who attended the online classes and prepared for university exams. The kids were asked to write at the end of the week what events were most important to them and analyze them in terms of which activities and errands they can manage themselves and which they cannot control. Also Elena suggested that they contact her any time during the week via Skype and talk about any problems they have to deal with, especially concerning life priorities and time management. At the end of the session Nigel asked the younger kids who also attended the session to draw a picture of what they would like to be in the future. Vanya drew a chef, Alyosha – a policeman and Sasha – someone who is very successful."

Volunteer Story

Nigel is a an exchange student from UTA who came to Omsk State University to study economics and Eastern European for one semester. She was a magnet for the kids in the orphanage during the whole day. Some were able to practice English with her and they all taught her a bit of Eastern European. She played in all games with the kids and she says she would love to come back to the orphanage next time.
