The Gift of Christ

The celebration of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection was a wonderful opportunity we could not pass up while visiting the children at the orphanage. Our volunteers made extra efforts to make this day special for the kids and to share the good news about salvation – the gift that Christ has given to us all who chose to receive it.

This hit close to home for one little girl. "I've heard about the story of Jesus' resurrection before but it's all been very confusing for me to understand. One of the volunteers was able to explain everything that happened during the crucifixion and resurrection and now I can better understand. I was shocked that Jesus was betrayed by his friends. I was betrayed and I know how painful that must have been for Him."

This year one of the rooms in the orphanage was repurposed into a kitchen. After sharing the story of the good news, the children were given an opportunity to practice preparing food, cooking, and independently serving themselves verses being served. They enjoyed this time being able to practice new skills and having a change in environment with eating in the dining room.

The orphanage does not receive funds to teach the children basic life skills such as this. Therefore, this event was made possible through the groceries provided by the volunteers and sponsors.

At the end of this visit, a very special surprise was waiting for them – brand new shoes from Allies. The children were beyond overjoyed and thankful.

As the volunteers continued to spend time with the children playing games and drinking tea, the children began to open up and relax. It takes time for them to bring down their wall of protection. It is a day to day battle, but for this day, they choose to take a step closer to the volunteers, to receive the gift of friendship, and to accept the love that Christ has asked us to bestow upon these children in reflection of Him.
